Flat Rate Pricing Ripoff Rip Off

Why The Ad?
I was teaching a business management class for a major distributor when a business owner blurted out the statement "If you charge $100 per hour, then you're ripping people off". He was adamant and most importantly, he was certain of what he just said.

Ironically, when we got to the section on pricing, this man's own work determined he should be charging about $117 just to break even. Here is the breakeven system we used. You can have it for free.

This man was astounded by how much it cost to send a highly qualified, nearly impossible to hire technician, driving a $50,000 hardware store on wheels, to someone's home or business. In fact, the entire class was shocked.

Consider what some other industries are charging:

People could say that these industries are ripping off America. The other possibility is that even less skilled labor costs a fortune and they have to charge this much just to make decent living.

What these companies all have in common is that they don't generally quote hourly rates. They know that people don't like uncertainly. They also know their rates, although justified, may sound overpriced to the uneducated buyer.

I really worry about the HVAC industry. This kind of work is about all I have ever done and I am saddened when I see hard working, honest, clueless people charging far less than they should. Many business owners are going broke and hurting their families in the process.

Now don't get me wrong, I've met a lot of people in this industry treating their families to a very nice living, but most aren't. The good news is that our industry has a lot of people trying to help companies be more successful. Yes, the help is out there but some people are too proud to take it. Some can't even be honest with themselves. I'm being honest with you.
